Model trains offer a world of opportunity for train enthusiasts. Learn how to get started in the fascinating and fun hobby of model railroading.
When the words “model train” are spoken, it instantly conjures images of a toy train circling faithfully around the Christmas tree at Christmas. But when model train enthusiasts hear those very same words, it means Z, N, HO, O, S, and G scale models trains, railroad landscaping, electrical engineering, miniatures, and more aspects of the hobby than most people can possibly imagine. Understanding Model Train Scale and GaugeTo avoid any confusion, the average toy train found at the local toy store should never be confused with a model train. Model trains are scaled down versions of the full size prototypes and run the gamut from “build it from scratch,” kit construction, ready-to-roll, and even trains large enough to ride on for those train enthusiasts who want to be their own engineer and ride the rails in the privacy of their backyard. Trains require a considerable amount of room to run, but for someone who doesn't have a lot of space to devote, the answer might lie in Z scale trains. These are the smallest size available in the world of model trains, with the following being in order according to size: N, HO at 1.87.1 scale—the most common size available, O, S—seen most in the UK, and G scale models—commonly referred to as LGB or Garden Scale. While scale refers to the size of the train, gauge refers to the distance between the tracks. Tracks are produced in standard and narrow gauge and there are charts are available to assist model railroaders with selection of the proper size track for their scale model. How to Get Started in Model TrainsThe best way to get started in the model train hobby is to visit a local model train club. Here, the veterans of the hobby can help newcomers with their questions and provide valuable hands-on experience that simply can't be found in a book or magazine. Most clubs have systems already set up and allow fellow train enthusiasts to run their own trains on the rails. In addition to being hands-on, many clubs offer regular workshops geared toward specific aspects of model railroading such as building a landscape feature, electrical wiring, track layout, construction engineering, assembling junctions, and more. Model railroading is great for people of all ages and is a perfect family activity because model railroading provides something for everyone. Best of all, model railroading is just plain fun. It's a great way to meet and connect with other people who share the same common interest. Not only that, rumor has it that old model railroaders never die, they just lose their track. Resources:
