Ever watched helicopters flying overhead and wished to be able to fly one of your very own but didn't want to risk leaving the ground? Fly an RC helicopter instead!

For RC hobbyists, RC helicopters present the ultimate challenge. Unlike RC planes, these scale model machines have a range of maneuverability that presents some unique challenges for beginners and experienced RC pilots alike. From learning the beginning maneuvers to adding a repertoire of advanced techniques, the RC helicopter will keep hobbyists coming back for more.

The beginning hobbyist would do well to start with an inexpensive RTF (Ready-to-Fly) helicopter for the inevitable crashes that will occur while learning to fly a scale model helicopter. After learning the basics, which could take weeks or months of practice, then hobbyists can consider advancing onto more technical models including custom built models.

Costs of Operating RC Helicopters

RC Helicopters are fun, addictive, and costly. Newcomers to the hobby can start off with a beginner model for around $70-$100, but make no mistake about it, this is a hobby that can get expensive fast. Hobbyists need to think about cost of upkeep and repair on equipment and also the cost of fuel for gas and nitro fueled models. Higher end RC helicopters are built better, last longer, and can run into thousands of dollars.

Indoor or Outdoor Flying?

For indoor flying a small electric helicopter is a must. Gas powered RC copters produce quite a bit of smoke and noise and should only be used outdoors. For indoor flying, smaller is better; mini and micro copters are perfect for indoor flying, even though larger RC helicopters provide better control and maneuverability. Outdoor RC flying opens the door for larger models, gas or nitro powered engines, and stunt flying.

As for indoor flying, beginners should perfect their skills outside and away from expensive equipment like flat screen televisions and aquariums. Ceiling fans are another unassuming obstacle to watch out for when flying indoors. Know the basics before flying indoors.

Mastering the Basics or RC Flight

There are flight simulator games available to beginning hobbyists that are helpful in learning the controls, but most beginners would be wise to seek out a RC helicopter flying instructor. Special trainer systems allow the hobbyist to fly the model while an instructor can takeover at any time as a backup. This helps prevent devastating crashes during the learning process and is well worth the cost of the training unit. Instructors can be found through many local RC flying clubs.

Interested in becoming an RC helicopter pilot? Visit local flying clubs and talk to the members. Get their perspectives on different models and go from there. Once started there's almost no turning back for this fast paced and exciting hobby. Try expanding into RC Cars or RC Boats for the next challenge.
